You get earphones so you can hear the guide even if they are far away. Our tour was in English and the guide spoke clearly and was very informative. We drove an hour to visit and it was more than worth it. The tour was excellent here and I highly recommend to anyone visiting the nearby regions. It would be good if the site could look at improving the experience for non-French speakers and modernising the booking process. Worth a visit although children may be underwhelmed (our 12 year old certainly was). If you can get there close to 9am you shouldn’t have long to wait later the wait will increase very quickly in season. You also do need to arrive early as there is no booking system and precious little to do in the area. The English written guides are useful but clearly not as extensive as the spoken tour they are also just paragraphs of text so not very engaging and it’s a little tricky to work out what applies when - I would recommend reading most of it on the way in so you don’t end up staring at text instead of the pictures! The guide speaks entirely in French (except for brief parts in English - mainly instructing you not to take photos or touch anything). However still worth a visit as the paintings are interesting and well worth seeing. Don’t expect to see dramatic lighting or exciting rock formations. Much of the trip is dark lit, barely lit with the guide picking features out with a torch. Very few stalactites here as the water diverted a long time ago, and aside from a few interesting rock formations it is almost all about the cave art. Very intriguing cave paintings and nice to see a different type of cave from the usual wet limestone caves. I would highly recommend this as well worth a visit, it lets you see some history of the area and provided us with insights about living at that age that I hadn’t thought about previously. The building itself is very impressive and you can tell they spent a lot of money to make it as worthwhile as possible, and they’ve done very well. Into the second part of the tour is the walking around of the reproductions with an interactive ‘iPad’ type device which allows you to see videos and VR displays - the kids loved this. The headsets helped a lot to hear the guide (which are part of the tour). Whilst this isn’t a theme park and we thought the kids might get bored, they actually liked it a lot. The art was interesting and the questions posed by the guide to provoke the thought process was a much better way of presenting the life and art of the period. The recreations were very good, at one point we did stop and ask ourselves if we were now in the real caves as opposed to the display ones - of course it was only the reproduction ones, but it’s that good. How wrong we were this was absolutely great, the (recreated) caves and art was excellent and the tour guide we had was really good with our group (English speaking group). We thought this would be a great visit for the adults and the kids would quickly become bored and do their usual ‘can we go’. ![]() |
